it was more than 13 years ago that the brothers teis & bjørn bruuns presented their first collection in 1995. when asked if they had anticipated the success of their company back then, their answer is an unexpected, but clear “yes!“. their goal is to convince as many people as possible worldwide of their stylish tailoring abilities. their careers originally were set to develop very differently. bjørn bruuns wanted to become a furniture designer and had already started to study architecture. fortunately, his drawing abilities were not sufficient, and so the bruuns brothers united to found a fashion company – just like their swedish grandfather had done once. they also adapted his philosophy and brought it into a more contemporary context. the motto of their approach to fashion, then and now: elegant fashion with a relaxed feeling for men and women. fashion with a classic touch, combined with modern pieces. this approach quickly became a synonym for the international scandinavian look. bruuns bazaar could already land a spot on the french show calendar in paris in january 1999 as one of the first danish fashion houses – this marked their international breakthrough. the high value of their creations is also documented by the popularity of the products with famous personalities – for example crown princess mary, who frequently comes by the studio for a fitting.
the current men’s collection for spring/summer 2008 is also designed true to their style: a homage to the classics of the 1950s and 1960s, mixed with scandinavian architectural elements and subtle references to classic sports cars. sporty details can be found on elegant tailor-made suits, and the colour palette ranging from black to lilac, green and golden sand gives the creations a modern touch. in the women’s collection, a smooth interpretation of the 1930s and 1970s stands in the foreground, paired with the nostalgic times, when women still dressed to the nines. for the ladies, it is all about dresses: simple cuts from luxurious materials, sensual volumes and glamorous applications.
the continuing popularity of bruuns bazaar can be attributed not only to their subtle style mixture of classic and avant-garde, but also to their exceptionally good price-performance ratio, which is quite a bit lower than that of their international colleagues. there are definitely plenty of reasons to come by one of the next copenhagen fashion events – for example by bruuns bazaar! text: patrick taschler
